The debate on where 3D belongs continues....
My opinion is that much like any other industry-shaking innovation like Color, 16mm, HD, etc., 3D will find a home as a medium/tool that if used intelligently in any format of motion picture, will add to the experience. But, if used unintelligently, will make any film look bad.
To me, both of the films in question did a great job of using 3D. Avatar used it as an obvious benefit to James Cameron's innovative mind, while Piranha used it to honor a timeless cinematic genre, the summer slasher/monster film. If James Cameron cannot appreciate the hilarity that Piranha brought to the screen, then maybe people are right when they say he takes himself a little too seriously. Avatar may be a ground-breaking, revenue shattering game changer, but its only a movie.....
